2 narrow wins, a narrow loss and 2 big defeats

Week 2 of the league season saw another mixed set of results as we recorded 2 wins and 3 losses.

The 1s went down by 15 runs at Wanstead as we failed to chase 195 after an impressive bowling effort. Adeel lead the way with 3-35 with Wogan (2-37) and George (2-24) also chipping in as we kept the home side below 200. In reply, George hit 46 and Adeel, a run-a-ball 32, but we just fell short as Akbar took 5-29 as the Herons took the 20 points.

In the reverse fixture, our 2nd XI suffered a 147 run defeat. Wanstead elected to bat and wracked up 339/9 off their 45 overs. Chowdhury and Zeb both scored 100s as they set us a daunting chase. Jameo was the standout bowler with 5-54 but we would need to bat out of our skins to get anyway near the target. Sadly, we didn’t and were bowled out for 192 in the 37th over. G Barnie top scored with 37 and, despite starts for some of the batters, we never looked likely to get anywhere near the 340.

The 3rd XI made it 3 wins from 3 with a nail biting 1 wicket win over Chelmsford. The home side batted first and made 242/6 with Lawrence failing just short a century and Nauman took 4-49. In reply, Azian continued his early season form with another half century whilst Ted Coney hit an impressive 90 as we seemed to be cruising towards victory. However, from 221/3 we slipped to 234/9 and, with nerves tangling, Dan Stevens and Omari saw us home with 3 balls left.

The 4th XI travelled to Loughton but returned with their tails between their legs after being hammered by 10 wickets. We were put into bat but failed miserably as we were bowled out for 46. Only Umair (16) reached double figures with extras our 2nd top scorer with 13. The home side were clearly in a rush to get the game over and took just 22 balls to chase the target down.

The 5th XI made the short trip to Ardleigh Green & Havering-Atte-Bower and made it 2 wins from 2 with an impressive 2 wicket win. With late drop outs and illness, we took to the field with only 10 and saw the home side score 226/4 off their allocated overs. In the chase, we fell to 6-2 but a half century for Mo (53), to follow on from his 2 wickets and 40 from debutant Anubbav saw us always in with a shout of reaching the target. However, some tight bowling and loss of wickets saw us lose our 7th wicket with 70 still needed. It was time for someone to step up and the returning Dean Skipper, fresh from running up and down some mountains and Wasif saw us home for what was an outstanding win. Not only did we only have 10 players, we spent time fielding with 8 and 9 men.
