HORNCHURCH CRICKET CLUB – 2026 SEASON PREVIEW

Graeme Farquhar3 May - 13:04

The covers are off, the teas are being planned, and the sound of leather on willow is back at Harrow Lodge — league cricket has returned.

There’s a familiar buzz around Hornchurch this year. A blend of continuity, fresh faces, and a strong pipeline of youth gives the club real optimism heading into the 2026 campaign. Across all five senior sides, the focus is clear: compete, develop, and enjoy the cricket.

1st XI

Led once again by George Hankins, the 1st XI go into the season determined to build on last year’s disappointing 7th-place finish. There’s quiet confidence in the group, strengthened by the arrival of Sam Handley from Hadleigh and the addition of Usman Ul-Haq, both adding quality to an already competitive side.

With a solid core in place, the aim is simple: climb the table and make a serious impact in cup competitions — including a strong tilt at the National Cup and trying to defend our Conference Cup

2nd XI

After the disappointment of relegation last season, Andy Roberts takes the reins with a clear objective: bounce back at the first attempt.

This year’s 2nd XI has a slightly different feel, with a strong emphasis on youth. It’s a side that will look to play positive cricket, develop emerging talent, and remain firmly in the promotion conversation from the outset.

3rd XI

New skipper Joe Defreitas leads the 3rd XI into a season that continues to bridge the gap between junior and senior cricket.

Following a respectable 4th-place finish last year, the side will once again focus on giving young players meaningful opportunities, while maintaining a competitive edge. It’s a crucial team in the club’s structure — and one that often sets the tone for what’s coming through.

4th XI

Ben Spray’s 4th XI have their sights set on consolidating their Premier League position.

With a healthy mix of experience and youth, this side represents the depth of the club. The goal is steady progress — not just in results, but in developing players who can push further up the ladder.

5th XI

Captained by Graeme Farquhar, the 5th XI continues to play a vital role in the club’s ecosystem.

Often the first taste of senior cricket for younger players — including several U13s this year — it’s a team built on opportunity, patience, and enjoyment. With hopes of improved availability, there’s optimism that performances will match the undeniable spirit within the group.

One Club, One Season

What stands out across all sides is the strength of the pathway. From junior cricket right through to the 1st XI, opportunities are there — and being taken.

Whether it’s chasing promotion, consolidating leagues, or simply enjoying a weekend in the sun, every team has its role to play in what promises to be another big season for Hornchurch Cricket Club.

Now, all that’s left is for the weather to cooperate.
