Week 7 of the league season saw us fail to win a game but at least we didn’t lose all 5!
The 1st XI traveled to Brentwood, lost the toss and saw Essex staffer, Will Buttleman hit 155 to set us a target of 285. Adeel Malik took 5 wickets but our cause wasn't helped as we dropped BUttleman 3 times before he had reached 80. In reply, George Hankins hit 60, with the rest of the top 4 all getting starts. losing regular wickets, the game was well set with us requiring 78 off 13 overs, Brentwood's keenest to keep on their pace bowlers in the fading light saw the umpires abandon the game because of bad light.
In the 2nd XI reverse fixture, we suffered a 3 wicket loss after 2 centuries from Brentwood's top 4 saw them chase down our total in the last over. After being asked to bat, Luke Edwwrds (94) and Mark James (53) put on 157 for the 1st wicket. Edwards fell just short of a century but we declared on 277/9 with Frankie Jacobs weighing in with some useful runs. We started well in the reply and reduced the visitors to 51/3. However, a stand of 178 between Gabriel Austin and Douglasd Maxwell saw Brentwood within touching distance of their chase. Some late wickets saw the game go down to the final over but Austin sealed the victory with 5 balls to spare.
Our 3rd XI welcomed South Woodford to Cromer Road and were denied a victory after failing to take the final South Woodford wicket. After winning the toss, we posted an impressive 264/7 off our 50 overs. No player reached 50 but there were telling contributions from Andrew Teague (47), Alex Sullivan (40) and Sam Childs (31*)., whilst some late innings fireworks from Omari Alexander (30*) propelled us to a challenging total. Naumaan Farooq took 3 early wickets and Dave Kiff and Mo KHan took 2-a-piece but, despite our best efforts, we were unable to take the last wicket and ended up having to settle for a winning draw.
Our 4th XI remain winless this season as they lost by 1 wicket to Wanstead & Snaresbrook. After being asked to bat, we were bowled out for 221 with George Green top scoring with 56. Mian Tafeeq and the wily Barry Bones both took 3 wickets in reply but Wasntead were able to sneak over the line.
Our youthful 5th Xi suffered a similar fate as they also lost by 1 wicket. After being asked to bat first, they found themselves 70-8. Enter captain Graeme Farquhar, who's first half century for 16 years, helped add 89 for the last 2 wickets to give the bowlers something to defend. The young trio of Ryan Jones, James Martin and Charlie Hunt all stepped up with a brace each but it wasn't quite enough as Upminister squeezed home by the narrowest of margins in a tense finish.
