The 1s Win a Thriller

Gav sees us over the line after King Les’ heroics.

Hornchurch Cricket Club’s 1st XI opened their season with a thrilling one-wicket victory over Upminster at Harrow Lodge Park, chasing down 269 in a dramatic contest.

After losing the toss, Hornchurch were sent into the field as Upminster made a steady start. Kiran Kullar struck 25 at the top, but early breakthroughs saw the visitors slip to 49-3. From there, Gus Philpot and Callum Berry rebuilt impressively, combining for a 128-run partnership. Berry led the charge with an aggressive 65, including four sixes, before Hornchurch debutant Sam Handley (3-36) made the breakthrough with a sharp caught-and-bowled. Philpot continued to anchor the innings, eventually falling for an excellent 84, bowled by Lesbourne Edwards just as he threatened three figures. Late contributions from Vansh Mehra (28*) and Zoran Suneel (16*) pushed Upminster to a competitive 269-5.

In reply, Hornchurch began positively through Jamie Sorrell and Usman Ul Haq, but the early loss of Sorrell (23) triggered a wobble as the side slipped to 47-3—mirroring Upminster’s earlier position. That brought Lesbourne Edwards to the crease, and the left-hander immediately seized control of the game.

Edwards played a remarkable innings, dominating the attack from the outset. He shared a steadying partnership with Sam Handley (19), before accelerating brilliantly, striking cleanly down the ground and punishing anything loose. His century came at pace, and alongside captain Gavin Griffiths, he appeared to be guiding Hornchurch comfortably towards victory.

With just nine runs needed, Edwards was eventually dismissed for a sensational 143 from 92 balls—an innings featuring 16 fours and 11 sixes. What followed, however, was a dramatic twist. Ollie Burley struck three times in as many balls to claim a hat-trick, leaving Hornchurch nine down and still needing nine runs.

Despite the sudden collapse, calm heads prevailed. Griffiths held his nerve, and with five runs required, fittingly sealed victory in a high-scoring contest by launching a six over wide long-on.

It was a game full of momentum swings and standout performances, but Hornchurch’s determination and Edwards’ extraordinary innings ultimately secured a memorable opening-day win.

Attention now turns to cup action, with us hosting Goresbrook in the League Cup on Saturday before welcoming Bedford Park to Harrow Lodge on Sunday in the National Cup.
