The 1st XI made it 5 from 5 with a 113-run win over Chingford in our first timed game of the season. Hanko’s incredible run of form continued with another sublime century. His 143 off 124 contained 17x4s and 4 maximums as he hit his 3rd league century of the season. He shared a 126 run stand with Ronnie (51) before some late fireworks from Dilly, propelled us to 319/6 declared. In reply, Billy took a wicket with the 1st ball of the innings and Gav grabbed one in the 2nd over. There was some resistance from Chingford’s Weerasinghe (55) but Dilly had him stumped. Wickets continued to fall with Dilly returning figures of 6-56 and despite a late cameo from the red helmeted Ahmadzai, we secured a big 25 points and stretched our lead at the summit.
The 2nd XI also enjoyed a good win as they made it 4 wins in a row with a 2 wicket win over Fives & Heronians. After asking Fives to bat first, the wickets were shared around as we limited them to 245/8 off their 50 overs. There were 3-a-piece for Frankie and Abhi, whilst Mylo and Freddie also got in on the act.
In reply, Lord Luke, fresh from his Butlins escapades, led the chase with 55 and George B hit a fluent 44 as we looked well set to chase it down. A flurry of wickets then fell and we found ourselves in a spot of bother as we fell to 182/6. However, a brilliant partnership between Teddy C and Abhi saw us almost home. A comical run out gave everyone watching a little scare but TC held his nerve to see us across the line for a big win.
The 3rd XI went to Wickford and won by 1 wicket in a thriller at Wickford Memorial Park. Archie Hunt’s sweetly struck maximum saw us chase 126 for a vital win. Pierre (2-14) and Dhiren Kumar (1-22) took early wickets before Alex Sullivan ran through the Wickford middle order; returning figures of 5-33. Archie then mopped up the tail with 2-8. The chase stumbled from the start but Pierre’s 39 saw us over halfway to the points. Another collapse saw us 93/9 with youngsters James Martin and Hunt at the crease. The pair batted superbly and with 6 left to win, Archie smashed the ball into the stream, at the request of the Wickford fielder, to take us home.
The 4th XI suffered a 9 wicket hammering against Horndon-on-the- Hill. After being put into bat, only 3 players reached double figures, with 15 year old Anuja top scoring with 27 as we could only muster 88. The visitors made short work of the chase and reached their target in the 17th over.
The 5th XI secured their first league win of the season with a 3 wicket win away at Harold Wood. After losing the toss, we bowled Wood out for 124. Bobby Sains (4-31) and Dave Kiff (4-30) took the wickets and were ably backed up by some outstanding fielding from the youngsters. A special mention must go to George Flecther, who performed brilliantly with the gloves behind the stumps. Our run chase started off well but we found ourselves staring down the barrel when we slipped to 66-7. However, the old and wise heads of skipper Farqs and Chris Sains put on 60 in 6 overs to see us over the line.
