WEEKEND REVIEW

Graeme Farquhar1 Jun - 09:25

Only the 4s win with 3 defeats and a concession on a week where selection was at an all-time level of poor.

The 1st XI suffered a third successive defeat as newly promoted Epping claimed an 88-run victory at Harrow Lodge on Saturday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors made a strong start despite an excellent opening spell from Freddie B, who struck early. Ahmad and Muminul then took control, both registering half-centuries as Epping looked set for a huge total. Hornchurch fought back admirably through Gav (3-55), Whitlock (3-60) and Sam (3-68), who each claimed three wickets to help restrict the visitors to 300 all out in the final over. Ahmad remained unbeaten on 97.

The chase began poorly with Sorrell falling in the opening over, but Kieran counter-attacked impressively before departing for 20. Hanko and Tommy B shared a 71-run partnership for the fourth wicket, with the skipper recording his third half-century in four league matches. However, Rafiq, the standout performer in the Epping attack, removed both batters as Hornchurch slipped to 169-8. Gav offered some resistance with 35, but the innings closed on 212, leaving us 88 runs short.

The 2nd XI fell agonisingly short at Loughton, losing by just 13 runs despite an excellent innings from Billy.

Loughton chose to bat first and posted 269 all out. Joe Ross led the bowling effort with 4-60, while Connor H collected three wickets. Kantumuchhu anchored the innings with a fine century. In reply, George B (60) and Billy kept Hornchurch firmly in contention with an excellent partnership. Billy's outstanding 82 gave the visitors genuine hope, but a lack of further significant contributions saw the chase stall just short of the target.

A weakened 3rd XI were beaten by five wickets at Upminster but produced a spirited display despite fielding a side containing just one player from the previous week's team.
After electing to bat, Hornchurch found themselves in serious trouble at 57-7. Returning player Mo Khan then produced a magnificent innings of 95 to rescue the innings and guide the side to 160 all out. D'Cruz was the chief destroyer for Upminster with remarkable figures of 6-30.

Hornchurch threatened an unlikely victory when 14-year-old Kriyansh Singh claimed a wicket with only his second ball in senior cricket. Mo Khan continued his excellent all-round return with three wickets, but composed batting from Upminster youngsters Berry, Moore and Brooks ultimately guided the hosts to victory.

The performance of the day, and perhaps the season so far, came from the 4th XI, who demolished Wickford by nine wickets in a match that lasted fewer than 18 overs.
After losing the toss, Hornchurch produced a devastating bowling display led by Carter Clark, whose extraordinary figures of 4.5-2-8-7 saw Wickford dismissed for just 31 in the 13th over. Ben S provided excellent support with 2-4. The chase was completed with equal ruthlessness, the target knocked off in only five overs, with Polash top-scoring with 16 from 14 balls.

Unfortunately, poor availability elsewhere in the club meant the 5th XI were forced to concede their fixture against Ilford.
